There are three Bevel options:
- Bevel BASE: Puts a Bevel modifier on base object that affects the entire geometry. This modifier is kept live and is not applied.
- Bevel NEW: This only affects the newly created geometry and it is automatically applied. It also has the "Vertices" option instead of the edges.
- Bevel 2D: Applied to the new geometry before the extrusions and it only affects the 2D silhuette. It has no effect in the 3rd dimention.
